Banks and credit unions rely heavily on power. They are expected to provide online banking, mobile banking, real-time bank statements, and other digital services for their customers, 24/7 every day of the year. Understanding Your Risks
Understanding that risk is key. Power outages pose as one of the biggest risks of customer service disturbances for banks and credit unions. Some power outages, such as power failures from national grids, are not predictable. Even so, it should be expected that power grid failures could spontaneously and randomly occur at periodic, short intervals and even complete blackouts could happen. When they do, they can last for extended periods of time and cause complete shutdowns of operations for a prolonged period of time.
Power Outagages Are Common
Power grid failures do happen. The Northeast Blackout of 2003 was a widespread power outage throughout parts of the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and the Canadian province of Ontario on the afternoon of August 14, 2003. The power outage occurred just before the close of most U.S. northeast banks and credit unions. Some larger bank institutions noted they were prepared for an occurrence like this with standby generators and transfer switches that led a rapid switch to backup power. The emergency generators for these banks enabled them to complete their end-of-day processes and activities without any material disruptions. Although, some smaller banks in the region were not as prepared and not so lucky. The power outage lead to data loss and tedious data retrieval efforts for these banks when power was restored.
Aside from these random blackouts, severe weather is more commonly the cause of power outages. During the summer, severe weather is unpredictable and is always a possibility. Typically wind shear is lowest and water temperatures are warmest during the summer months, which makes it relatively easy for severe weather to become a daily occurrence for coastal areas. With these conditions, tropical disturbances are more likely to become major hurricanes. With hurricane season becoming more and more active each year, banks and credit unions are making hurricane preparedness a priority. A pivotal part of those plans is having emergency generators to maintain operations and protect customer data.
